John
Navy Cap

John is a bowel cancer survivor.

“My mother Shirley had battled bowel cancer for several years, and with other family members affected by the disease, she pestered me to have a check-up when I turned 50. Her intuition proved correct, with a colonoscopy detecting a tumour. I had surgery to remove the tumour, followed by six months of chemotherapy. My mother passed away on the morning of my 11th treatment, leaving me with so much to thank her for.”

Michelle

Navy Crew Jumper

Michelle’s grandmother was diagnosed with bowel cancer three years ago.

Then late last year, Michelle experienced some unusual gut symptoms which she followed up with her GP. She was referred to a gastroenterologist who booked her in for a colonoscopy, where a polyp was removed. The pathology results came back that the polyp was pre-cancerous, highlighting the importance of following-up on unusual gut symptoms with a doctor as soon as possible, regardless of age.
